The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation officially handed over the newly constructed and refurbished Tarkwa & Abosso (T&A) Stadium in Tarkwa to the National Sports Authority today.
This milestone event signifies the completion of a major investment that started in January 2020 and was finalized in June of this year, with a remarkable total cost of $16.2 million.
The extensive renovation has upgraded the once modest 400-seat football park into a world-class stadium with a seating capacity of 10,400, ready to host international matches. This development is set to energize the local sports scene and establish Tarkwa as a prominent hub in Ghanaian football.
Michael Akafia, Vice-President of External Affairs at Gold Fields Ghana and current President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, highlighted the stadium’s broader impact.
“The construction of the stadium will have far-reaching impacts beyond just sports,” Akafia stated. “Football has the power to promote social cohesion among communities. Our decision to invest was the result of an extensive consultation and engagement process with our host communities.”
The T&A Stadium will now be the home ground for Tarkwa’s Ghana Premier League team, Medeama SC, who won the championship for the 2022/2023 season.
This state-of-the-art facility is anticipated to stimulate local business, develop young talent, and advance football in Ghana, including women’s football.
Constructed in accordance with FIFA’s sustainable building guidelines, the stadium was built using materials from sustainable sources, ensuring it is both energy and water-efficient. This aligns with Gold Fields’ mission to create lasting value beyond mining.
Akafia emphasized the project’s long-term vision: “Our goal was to provide a sustainable and environmentally friendly stadium for the people of Tarkwa and neighboring communities. This stadium is not just a sports facility; it is a driver for community development and social unity.”
The grand opening of the T&A Stadium is set to be a significant milestone for Tarkwa, ushering in a new era of sports and community involvement in the region.
