Kurt Okraku: We believed the Black Stars would bounce back after the 2022 World Cup setback.

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has expressed optimism about the progress of the Ghana national football team, despite their disappointing campaign at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The senior national team returned to the World Cup stage after missing the 2018 tournament in Russia. However, their campaign in Qatar ended in frustration, following a loss to Portugal, a thrilling 3-2 win over South Korea, and a final group-stage defeat to Uruguay, which left them at the bottom of Group H.

Speaking to Asaase Radio, Okraku reflected on the experience, noting that few believed Ghana would even qualify for the tournament. He said the team defied the odds, remained steadfast in their belief, and secured qualification by overcoming Nigeria in the playoffs.

Although Ghana failed to progress beyond the group stage, he said the team left Qatar with pride, highlighting that they had one of the youngest squads at the tournament and delivered an impressive performance overall.

“In the second group match against South Korea, we performed strongly, and that gave us optimism for the future,” he added.

Looking ahead, the Ghana national football team are preparing for their fifth World Cup appearance this summer in the United States, Canada and Mexico, where they will come up against Panama, England and Croatia in Group L.
