“Afenyo-Markin Tips NPP for Majority If Elections Are Held Now”

Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin says he is confident the opposition NPP will return to power in the 2028 general elections.

He stated that no parliamentary seat currently held by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) would be safe.

Addressing executives of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) in Parliament on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, Afenyo-Markin expressed confidence that the NPP would regain political power if members put in the necessary work.

The Effutu MP urged party faithful to strengthen grassroots mobilisation, stressing that victory would hinge on discipline, loyalty, and consistent engagement with voters.

“If elections were held today, the NPP would secure the majority—but that will require hard work and loyalty. We are confident you will rise to the occasion,” he said.

He accused the government of failing to deliver on key campaign promises, arguing that this would lead to its defeat in the next elections. He cited the proposed 24-hour economy policy as one of the major issues for which voters would hold the administration accountable.

Pointing to what he described as underperformance, the lawmaker added that the failure to increase cocoa producer prices, along with rising utility tariffs, are further indications that the NPP stands a strong chance in the next general elections.

Afenyo-Markin also urged TESCON members to dismiss claims that the NPP marginalises certain ethnic groups, insisting that the party is inclusive and committed to representing all Ghanaians, regardless of their background.

On his part, the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Samuel Awuku, who also addressed the meeting, reinforced the party’s stance, declaring that the NPP would fiercely contest every seat currently held by the NDC.

“We will join our colleagues in intensifying our presence on campuses. The 2028 election will be a full-scale effort—no NDC seat will be safe. We will treat every NDC-held seat as competitive,” he stated.
