Ashanti Police launch manhunt for six robbers over killing of Berekum Chelsea player

The Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region has launched a manhunt for six armed men who attacked a Berekum Chelsea team bus along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road on Sunday night, killing a player and robbing another passenger of GH¢4,500.

According to a statement issued on April 13, 2026, police patrol teams responded to distress calls and arrived at the scene, where a VIP bus with registration number AM 9334-20, carrying about 30 players and officials from Samreboi to Berekum, had veered off the road into a bush while attempting to escape the attackers. The assailants were reportedly six in number, with three wielding pump-action guns.

During the нападение, Dominic Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment. Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was robbed of GH¢4,500.

Police retrieved two spent BB cartridges from the scene to aid investigations.

The Regional Police Command has since deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area and is intensifying efforts to apprehend the suspects. Authorities have assured the public that the perpetrators will be arrested as soon as possible.

The police have also urged residents to remain calm and continue to cooperate with law enforcement as investigations proceed.
