Ghana’s president John Dramani Mahama to spotlight reparatory justice at UN

John Dramani Mahama Heads to UN to Champion Reparatory Justice for Africa

President John Dramani Mahama is set to lead Ghana’s delegation to the United States for a high-level engagement on reparatory justice and the remembrance of victims of the transatlantic slave trade.

The President is scheduled to depart Accra on Monday, March 23, 2026, for visits to New York City and Pennsylvania, in what officials describe as a historic mission aimed at advancing global discussions on historical injustice.

A major highlight of the trip will be his participation in a High-Level Special Event on Reparatory Justice at the United Nations Headquarters on Tuesday, where he is expected to convene the session and deliver a keynote address.

The event, themed “Reparatory Justice for the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans and the Racialised Chattel Enslavement of Africans,” is expected to convene global leaders and senior officials to examine the enduring impact of slavery and advance discussions on the case for reparations.

On Wednesday, President Mahama will address the United Nations General Assembly as part of activities marking the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

During the session, he is expected to outline Ghana’s position—adopted by the African Union—on a landmark resolution calling for the trafficking of enslaved Africans and the racialised chattel enslavement of Africans to be formally recognised as the gravest crime against humanity.

The visit will commence with a wreath-laying ceremony at the African Burial Ground National Monument, where the President will honour the memory of enslaved Africans.

As part of his itinerary, President John Dramani Mahama will also travel to Lincoln University to deliver a keynote address, before engaging with the Ghanaian community at Temple University.
