Ghana Football Association charges Hohoe United over GPL withdrawal

The Ghana Football Association has officially charged Hohoe United for withdrawing from the ongoing Ghana Premier League without just cause.

In an official statement, the Ghana Football Association prosecutor announced that Hohoe United has been charged with breaching Articles 13(1) and 34(6)(d) of the GFA Ghana Premier League Regulations, 2025.

The statement noted that the club is alleged to have withdrawn from the ongoing Ghana Premier League without just cause, adding that its actions have brought the game into disrepute.

The GFA further confirmed that Hohoe United has until Tuesday, April 14, 2026, to respond to the charges.

The development follows the club’s decision to pull out of the league with seven matches remaining in the 2025 season.

Competing in their maiden top-flight campaign, Hohoe United were battling relegation, having accumulated 30 points from 27 matches at the time of their withdrawal.

As a result, the club failed to honour their Matchweek 29 fixture against Techiman Eleven Wonders on Friday, April 3, 2026, at the Swedru Sports Stadium.

Eleven Wonders, who have already been relegated, were subsequently awarded three points and three goals.

Sources close to Hohoe United indicate that a mix of disciplinary sanctions and dissatisfaction with officiating decisions influenced the club’s decision.

At the heart of their concerns was a three-match home ban imposed over security-related incidents at the Hohoe Sports Stadium. The sanction came at a critical point in the season, significantly reducing the team’s ability to benefit from home advantage, which had contributed the bulk of their points.

The situation was further complicated by fixture arrangements, with most of their remaining matches scheduled away or at neutral venues, including some officially designated as home fixtures.

Although the club has yet to issue an official response to the charges, the case is expected to test the regulatory framework of the Ghana Football Association and could carry major implications for both Hohoe United and the integrity of the competition.
