NDC Vows to Transform Ghana’s Sports Sector with an Inclusive Focus Beyond Football

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has revealed an ambitious plan to revitalize Ghana’s sports sector, aiming for a more equitable allocation of resources and a reduced focus on football.

For years, aside from the Black Stars, Ghana’s national teams have suffered from limited support, hindering the growth of other sports disciplines.

The NDC’s strategy seeks to correct this imbalance and promote the comprehensive development of the nation’s sports industry if they emerge victorious in the upcoming December elections.

Key elements of the NDC’s sports policy include:

Enhanced Financial Support for Footballers: The party pledges to boost financial backing for footballers at all levels, from Colts to the Ghana Premier League, by increasing salaries and providing additional allowances.

Facility Upgrades: National stadia in Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Cape Coast, and Sekondi will see immediate improvements to pitches, tracks, and other facilities, ensuring they meet FIFA standards.

Building International Standard Stadia: The NDC plans to continue its efforts to construct state-of-the-art stadia in every region across the country.

Multi-purpose Sports Facilities: New facilities will be established to support regional sporting events and inter-school competitions, helping to nurture talent.

Equitable Investment in National Teams: There will be a concerted effort to invest equally in various national teams, including women’s football, parasports, juvenile teams, and lesser-known sports.

Modern Sports University: The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Sports College will be upgraded into a modern sports university, providing training in sports science, sports medicine, and sports management/administration at multiple campuses in Ghana.

Sports Centres of Excellence: These will be set up in the northern, middle, and southern zones, in collaboration with universities and the private sector, to enhance sports training and development.

Support for National Athletes: The NDC promises consistent support for national athletes, helping them compete internationally and prepare for post-competition careers, including pension schemes.

Scholarships and Sports Academies: Scholarships will be offered to promising sports talents, and sports academies will be created in partnership with the private sector.

Support for Retired Athletes: Retired sports personalities will receive assistance in pursuing sports-related careers after their active sporting life.

These initiatives are outlined in the party’s manifesto ahead of the 2024 elections, with confidence that their leader, former President John Mahama, will lead them to victory.
