Government Sets Up Committee to Review Tertiary Hostel Fees
Mr. Iddrisu has announced the formation of a committee to examine concerns surrounding tertiary hostel fees, with a commitment to ensuring fairness and affordability in student accommodation.
He made the announcement during the swearing-in ceremony of the governing councils of the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences, where he assured students and stakeholders of government intervention to address rising concerns over accommodation costs.
According to him, the committee will engage key stakeholders, including university authorities, private hostel operators, student bodies, and regulatory agencies, to assess the situation and propose workable solutions.
“We will not operate solely on private partnership principles where unlimited fee guidelines dictate the pace. We will be social and reflect social values and concerns in the delivery of that public good,” he stated.
The initiative is expected to provide a framework for addressing challenges in student accommodation and ensuring more regulated and affordable hostel fee structures.
The minister’s intervention comes amid growing public debate over accommodation costs in universities and other tertiary institutions, with many students urging stronger regulation of hostel fees as well as increased investment in on-campus housing infrastructure.
