AMA Gives Agbogbloshie Traders One-Month Notice to Vacate for 24-Hour Economy Market
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has given traders and other occupants on portions of land at Agbogbloshie, popularly known as the Nzema Market, a one-month notice to vacate the area to pave the way for the construction of a 24-Hour Economy Market.
The notice, formally served on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, is expected to expire on August 28, after which the Assembly will begin removing structures on the affected portions of land.
In a Facebook post on Monday, August 10, the AMA said the affected areas include the Agbogbloshie Cargo Station, the Nzema Market and portions of the Yam Market.
According to the Assembly, all traders and commercial operators affected by the redevelopment will be relocated to a parcel of land prepared specifically for them.
The decision follows a series of consultations between the AMA and key stakeholders, including traditional authorities, market leaders, traders and other community representatives, regarding the proposed redevelopment and clearance exercise.
As part of preparations for the exercise, the AMA on Tuesday marked structures located within the areas earmarked for the project.
The Assembly subsequently began a public education and sensitisation campaign on Wednesday, August 5, to explain the redevelopment plans to traders, community leaders and residents.
The campaign is also aimed at providing information on the expected benefits of the project, the clearance process and arrangements for relocating affected traders and other occupants.
The AMA says the redevelopment forms part of efforts to support the implementation of the government’s 24-Hour Economy programme through the development of a dedicated market facility.
Affected persons have therefore been urged to take note of the August 28 deadline and make the necessary arrangements to relocate to the designated site.
