Kurt Okraku: Sacking Otto Addo Was in Ghana’s Best Interest Ahead of World Cup

President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, has stated that the decision to part ways with Black Stars head coach Otto Addo was made in the best interest of the nation, with just 72 days to the FIFA World Cup.

Addo was dismissed on Monday following a string of disappointing results in recent international friendlies. The Black Stars suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria before falling 2-1 to Germany—both matches serving as key preparations for the upcoming tournament. These outcomes prompted the FA’s Executive Committee to reassess the team’s direction.

Speaking to 3Sports, Okraku explained that the decision followed extensive discussions and a thorough review of recent performances.

“I’ve watched our last four or five matches, and together with the Executive Committee, we evaluated those games and reflected on our shared World Cup ambitions. We felt it was time to take a new direction in pursuit of that vision,” he said.

Okraku further emphasised the importance of collective leadership, noting that decisions of such magnitude require putting national interest above personal views.

“As a leader, you may hold strong personal opinions, but there are moments when you must align with the collective for the greater good. At this point, we believe it is Ghana first, and a new path is necessary,” he added.

The Ghana FA is now expected to begin the search for a new head coach to lead the Black Stars into the World Cup.
