GJA expresses concern over reported police intimidation of journalists

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has raised concerns over what it describes as an increasing pattern of intimidation targeting journalists by the Ghana Police Service.

This follows a series of recent invitations and interrogations involving media practitioners, which the Association says are worrying and could undermine press freedom.

At a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, March 18, President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Albert Dwumfour, warned that recent actions by the Police could create a climate of fear within the media.

He pointed to a February 11, 2026 incident in which the Criminal Investigations Department invited several journalists for questioning over an alleged false publication, following a complaint by the head of a state agency.

Mr Dwumfour argued that the case was already being handled in court as a civil matter, making the Police’s involvement unnecessary and troubling.

“This amounts to intimidation,” he said, stressing that such actions risk undermining press freedom and could discourage journalists from carrying out their duties without fear.

Albert Dwumfour further revealed that another journalist was invited by the Ghana Police Service on February 24, 2026, and questioned over publications in his newspaper, including allegations of extortion involving an unnamed third party.

According to him, the journalist requested evidence to substantiate the claims, but investigators reportedly failed to provide any details. He was subsequently granted bail but later subjected to additional interrogation, during which his private communications were examined.

More troubling, Mr Dwumfour alleged that the journalist’s working tools, including his mobile phone, were seized under unclear circumstances and without proper documentation, reportedly based on an ex parte court order.
