We’re strong enough to beat Austria’ — Otto Addo declares ahead of friendly

Ghana national football team head coach Otto Addo has voiced strong confidence in his team’s preparedness ahead of their international friendly against Austria, describing the match as a vital test of Ghana’s readiness for upcoming global competitions.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, Otto Addo said he is anticipating a tough encounter against a tactically disciplined Austrian side known for its high-intensity pressing game.

“We’re delighted to be here, and I expect a very exciting match. It will certainly be intense, as Austria are known for their aggressive pressing style, influenced by the Red Bull football philosophy. They are a very strong, physical side with high energy and constant movement. Their players compete at top clubs. But we also have quality players and talented footballers,” he said.

The Ghana national football team coach added that the Austria clash, along with the upcoming fixture against Germany, presents a valuable opportunity to assess his team against top European opposition after a long absence from the continent.

“It will be a very exciting experience for us, especially after a long absence from Europe, to face a European side. I believe this will be a strong test for both teams,” said Otto Addo.

The Ghana national football team coach also confirmed that key forwards Iñaki Williams and Brandon Thomas-Asante will miss the game due to injury, but noted that their absence creates an opportunity for others to step up.

“Injuries are always unfortunate. Iñaki has been in great form, and Brendan was just returning and scoring goals before his setback, so I really feel for them. However, it gives other players a chance to prove themselves. I’m pleased the squad is generally in good condition. Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer has come in as a replacement and has looked sharp.

“We must stay focused on what lies ahead. There’s no need to dwell on who is unavailable. Several players are dealing with injuries, but hopefully everyone will be fit and ready in time for the World Cup,” he added.

Despite acknowledging Austria’s strengths, Otto Addo remains confident that his side has what it takes to compete and possibly come out on top.

“I believe we have a strong enough squad to beat Austria. In football, anything can happen—any team can defeat another. We saw at the last World Cup that no side should be underestimated. Of course, Germany is a big name, but right now our focus is not on them.

“Our full attention is on Austria. We aim to win every match we play, and this one is no different. We’ve studied them carefully and understand their approach. I’m very optimistic the players will deliver. Ultimately, it’s about their performance on the pitch—we know what needs to be done,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of executing the game plan to perfection, stressing that Ghana must match Austria’s intensity and tactical discipline on the day.

“We have to carry out our plan effectively. As I mentioned, it’s going to be a very intense game, and that’s exactly what we expect. Austria are a strong side with a very good coach who understands the game well, so we cannot afford to take anything lightly. Our focus is to get the job done here, and only after that will we turn attention to Germany,” said Otto Addo.

Addo also acknowledged the quality within the Austrian squad, highlighting experienced figures such as David Alaba, while maintaining that Ghana has the depth to compete.

“They are a very good team with experienced players and strong tactical organisation, which reflects the influence of their coach. David Alaba brings a wealth of experience, their midfield is solid, and they are dangerous in attack. But as I’ve said, we also have the quality and resources to match them,” he added.
