Upper West Police Intercept Large Narcotics Consignments, Arrest Multiple Suspects

The Ghana Police Service has intensified its fight against drug trafficking in the Upper West Region, leading to the arrest of several suspects and the seizure of large quantities of suspected narcotic substances.

According to a press release issued by the Upper West Regional Police Command on April 6, 2026, the operation forms part of a broader strategy to clamp down on drug-related activities through coordinated intelligence and field operations. Over the past four weeks, police have carried out a series of successful interceptions across multiple districts, including Eremon in the Lawra District, Nadowli barrier and Loho in the Nadowli-Kaleo District, Charhe and Siriyiri in the Wa Municipality, as well as Hamile in the Lambussie District.

The seizures reportedly include 218 compressed slabs, 54 parcels, and eight additional consignments of substances believed to be Indian hemp. Authorities say these operations highlight a growing trend of drug trafficking routes within the region, particularly along corridors leading northwards toward Hamile.

In one of the major operations on April 3, 2026, a police patrol team intercepted a taxi vehicle at Eremon in the Lawra District. A search of the vehicle uncovered 140 compressed slabs of the suspected narcotic substance. Two individuals, identified as Dennis Domoyel and Clovis Saame, were arrested in connection with the incident.

Earlier, on April 1, 2026, police officers stationed at the Wa-Loho barrier retrieved 51 compressed slabs from a Royal VVIP bus traveling from Wa to Jirapa. Three suspects—Stephen Lomotey, Solomon King, and Uirilius Tobopalee—were subsequently arrested.

Police indicate that in most of the cases, the substances were being transported northbound, suggesting a consistent trafficking pattern within the region.

All suspects are currently undergoing various stages of investigation and prosecution, while the vehicles used in the operations have been impounded.

The Regional Command has also issued a strong warning to transport operators and unions, urging them to remain vigilant and avoid allowing their vehicles to be used for the transportation of illicit drugs. Authorities cautioned that any vehicle found to be involved in such activities risks being seized by the state, with owners facing legal consequences.

Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the Upper West Regional Police Command assured residents that it remains resolute in its efforts to combat drug-related crimes and ensure a safer environment for all.
