Fred Pappoe to GFA: Choose a coach who understands Ghana’s football culture

Former Ghana Football Association Vice-President Fred Pappoe has urged the association to appoint a Black Stars head coach who possesses a strong understanding of Ghana’s football identity, as the national team prepares for a new technical direction ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The GFA is currently in search of a new head coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties less than three months before the tournament. His departure followed a heavy 5–1 defeat to Austria in Vienna and a 2–1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart during the March international window.

Several high-profile coaches have since been linked to the position, including Carlos Queiroz, Paulo Bento and Fernando Santos, all of whom bring significant international experience.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, Pappoe emphasised that while differing opinions on the appointment are expected, the selected coach must be given the autonomy to perform his duties without undue interference.

“These are very detailed specifics that I think should be left to the coach,” he noted. “Whichever coach is appointed must be given the space to operate. The coach understands best the players he needs.”

He further stressed the need for a tactician who can quickly adapt, inspire the squad, and operate effectively within Ghana’s football environment without requiring a prolonged adjustment period.

“He must be a coach who can hit the ground running, with a deep understanding of the local football culture, the players, and the national mindset,” he added. “That is the kind of coach I would look out for.”

The GFA is expected to announce a new head coach next week, in line with assurances from Sports Minister Kofi Adams, ahead of upcoming international friendlies against Mexico in May and Wales on June 2.

Ghana will then begin its 2026 World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27, as the Black Stars aim to improve on their group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022.
