President Mahama Launches Free Primary Health Care Programme in Ghana

John Dramani Mahama has officially launched Ghana’s landmark Free Primary Health Care Programme, a major initiative aimed at expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare for all citizens.

The programme was unveiled at the Shai Osudoku District Hospital, marking a significant step toward strengthening the country’s primary healthcare system and advancing universal health coverage.

The initiative is designed to remove financial barriers at the entry point of healthcare delivery by ensuring that essential primary health services are accessible to all Ghanaians at no cost. It is expected to enhance early diagnosis, improve disease prevention, and reduce the burden on higher-level health facilities.

Speaking at the launch, President Mahama described the programme as a transformative intervention that will reshape the country’s healthcare landscape and promote equity in access to medical services. He noted that prioritising primary healthcare is key to building a resilient and efficient health system.

The Free Primary Health Care Programme is also expected to improve health outcomes, particularly in underserved communities, by bringing services closer to the people and strengthening community-based care.

Health officials say the initiative forms part of broader efforts to achieve universal health coverage and ensure that no Ghanaian is denied basic healthcare due to financial constraints.

The government has assured the public of its commitment to sustaining the programme through strategic investments, improved infrastructure, and strengthened healthcare delivery systems nationwide.
