The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has welcomed government’s recent intervention to reduce fuel costs, describing it as a timely move that has eased pressure on transport operators.
The Head of Industrial Relations of the GPRTU, Alhaji Abass Imoro, made this known in an interview on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on Wednesday, April 15. He explained that the union had been preparing to increase transport fares due to rising operational costs, particularly fuel.
However, he said the government’s intervention has brought significant relief to operators, prompting the union to put any immediate fare increment on hold.
“We thank God for Government living up to expectations. We were to increase fares due to our condition on fuel and other items we use to run transport. Today’s announcement, we are happy,” he stated.

According to him, the GPRTU will closely monitor developments over the next two fuel pricing windows before taking any further decision on transport fares.
“We have also started talking to our people, all of us should make sure that we study this for two fuel pricing windows for now,” he added.
Alhaji Imoro further noted that while the current reduction is encouraging, transport operators are hopeful government will sustain the intervention and achieve further reductions in fuel prices to ease operational burdens.
“For now, we are happy with the current reduction or intervention by government… if government can study and make sure there is a further deduction in fuel prices for us, we will be very happy,” he said.
He emphasized that sustained fuel price stability would help maintain current fares and provide relief to both transport operators and commuters.
