La General Hospital to Be Completed by November 2027 — Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence that the reconstruction of the La General Hospital will be completed and ready for commissioning by November 2027.

The assurance follows a site inspection by the President, who was accompanied by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. During the visit, President Mahama commended contractors and workers for the steady progress of work, while urging them to sustain the momentum to meet the set deadline.

He emphasised that the prolonged closure of the hospital has placed significant pressure on nearby health facilities, highlighting the urgency of completing the project to restore access to quality healthcare services for residents in the La enclave and surrounding communities.

The reconstruction of the La General Hospital is seen as a critical intervention aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery in the Greater Accra Region and easing the burden on overstretched facilities in the capital.

The President also revealed plans to convert the COVID-era emergency centre at Burma Camp into a facility for handling emergency cases, aimed at reducing delays in treatment. He further underscored the government’s broader commitment to preventive healthcare through the recently introduced Free Primary Healthcare initiative.

The Minister for Health explained that although redevelopment of the facility commenced in 2020, the project faced funding and payment challenges that slowed progress. He noted that full-scale work resumed in 2025 after these issues were resolved.

Mr Akandoh further indicated that upon completion, the hospital is expected to serve more than 50,000 residents in La and surrounding communities, significantly strengthening healthcare delivery in the capital.
