Three Killed After Illegal Mining Pit Collapses at Odumase-Santenso
Three people have died after an illegal mining pit collapsed at Odumase-Santenso, trapping them underground.
According to the Assembly Member for the area, Isaac Kyei Andoh, the incident occurred at about 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026.
Mr Andoh said community members alerted him after the pit caved in, prompting immediate efforts to rescue the victims who were trapped underground.
The deceased have been identified as two women and a man, all aged between 21 and 25 years.
According to the Assembly Member, two of the deceased women were residents of Bomeriso.
The bodies were recovered between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. after the necessary customary rites had been performed at the scene. They were subsequently conveyed to the mortuary.
Mr Andoh said the victims were engaged in illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey, and were digging deep pits with makeshift equipment in an attempt to extract gold.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with illegal mining activities, particularly the use of poorly supported and unstable mining pits that can collapse without warning.
