Ghana Education Service Announces Instalment Plan to Clear Teachers’ Salary Arrears

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that government has approved the payment of outstanding salary arrears owed to newly recruited teachers under the 2024 financial clearance.

According to the Service, the approval was granted by the Ministry of Finance in collaboration with the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD).

In a statement issued on April 20, 2026, and signed by the Head of the Public Relations Unit, Daniel Fenyi, GES indicated that the directive applies to eligible newly recruited teachers whose salary arrears accumulated between August 1, 2024, and November 2025.

The Ghana Education Service explained that the decision forms part of ongoing efforts to regularise salary payments and resolve delays affecting teachers who had already reported to post and begun work during the period under review.

“Management of the Ghana Education Service wishes to inform the general public, especially newly recruited teachers, that approval has been granted for the payment of outstanding salary arrears associated with the utilisation of the 2024 financial clearance,” the statement noted.

According to the Service, the arrears will be settled in instalments rather than as a one-time lump sum, with payments expected to commence in May 2026.

Under the arrangement, four months’ worth of arrears will be paid each month from May through August 2026.

The Ghana Education Service noted that the phased approach is intended to “ensure efficiency, accuracy, and transparency in the disbursement process, as well as facilitate proper validation and processing of payments through the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department.”

It added that regional directors have been instructed to relay the information to heads of schools to ensure all eligible staff are adequately informed.

“Regional Directors have been directed to communicate this information to all Heads of Schools to ensure that eligible staff are duly informed.

Management assures all staff of its continued commitment to their welfare and appreciates their patience and cooperation,” the statement said.

The Service reiterated its commitment to staff welfare and expressed gratitude to affected teachers for their patience throughout the period.
