The Ghana Police Service has arrested 77 suspects during a major anti-drug operation carried out in Tamale and Savelugu.
According to a statement from the Northern Regional Police Command, the operation was conducted by the Special Operations Team, also known as “Red Maria,” as part of intensified efforts to combat drug trafficking and related criminal activities in the region.

The exercise took place on Monday, March 23, 2026, at about 9:30 pm, involving a team of 33 personnel. Police targeted several identified hotspots, including areas within Lamashegu, where initial arrests were made.
The operation later moved to the Aboabo market area, where another suspect was apprehended with a powdered substance suspected to be cocaine. Further intelligence led to the arrest of an alleged supplier at NOBISCO, although no incriminating items were found during a search of his residence.

Acting on additional intelligence, the team extended the operation to Savelugu, where a major raid at a known drug peddling location resulted in the arrest of 74 more suspects.
Exhibits retrieved during the operation included seven motorbikes, one Toyota Camry vehicle, quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, and ten sachets of tramadol.

All suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations. Authorities say the individuals are being screened, and those found culpable will be arraigned before court.
The Northern Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to tackling drug-related offences and ensuring public safety. It also called on the public to support law enforcement efforts by providing timely and credible information.
