Africa Senior Athletics Championships launched in grand style in Accra.

The 24th African Senior Athletics Championships was officially launched in Accra on Wednesday, signalling the beginning of preparations for the prestigious continental event.

Ghana is set to host some of Africa’s top track and field talents, with global stars such as Letsile Tebogo, Faith Kipyegon, and Beatrice Chebet expected to headline the competition.

The championships are scheduled to run from May 12 to May 17, 2026, at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Speaking at the launch, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, underscored the need for greater investment in athletics infrastructure nationwide.

“Athletics remains a sport that can unite our nation and drive development if the right investments are made,” he stated.

He also raised concerns about the lack of adequate training facilities in some regions, noting that not all parts of the country have proper tracks for developing athletes. According to him, Accra 2026 should serve as an opportunity for young talents to witness elite competition firsthand. He emphasized that exposing them to top-level athletes would inspire and motivate the next generation.

This will mark the first time Ghana hosts the African Senior Athletics Championships, with the nation aiming to showcase its organizational capacity and expanding sports infrastructure while inspiring future stars.
