The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that this year’s ban on drumming and noise-making will be observed from Monday, May 4 to Thursday, June 4, 2026, across the Ga Traditional Area.
In a public notice issued in collaboration with the Ga Traditional Council, the Assembly explained that the directive is intended to maintain peace, harmony, and security ahead of the annual Homowo Festival.
As part of the guidelines, churches are required to confine their activities within their premises and suspend the use of musical instruments throughout the period. The placement of loudspeakers outside churches, mosques, and pubs has also been prohibited, while roadside evangelism is temporarily banned.
The directive further urges religious groups and traditional leaders to promote tolerance and avoid inflammatory or offensive remarks about other beliefs and practices. In line with Ga customs, funeral rites and related activities are also prohibited during the period.
The AMA emphasized that enforcement will be handled exclusively by an authorized task force comprising Assembly officials, the Ghana Police Service, and representatives of traditional authorities. It warned that no individual or group outside this arrangement is permitted to enforce the directive.
Residents have been encouraged to comply fully to ensure a peaceful observance of the ‘Nmaa Dumo’ period. The Assembly has also provided dedicated hotlines for inquiries and further clarification.
