28 Trafficking Victims Rescued by Ghanaian Authorities from Côte d’Ivoire

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ghana has announced the successful rescue and repatriation of 28 Ghanaian nationals, most of them young people, from a human trafficking network operating in Côte d’Ivoire, following a coordinated cross-border security operation.

In a press release issued on Sunday, May 10, the Ministry revealed that the victims were freed through a joint effort involving security operatives and officials from the Ghana Embassy in Abidjan. The statement described the case as part of a “sophisticated human trafficking network” targeting vulnerable individuals.

According to the Ministry, all 28 victims have safely returned to Ghana and are currently assisting security agencies with ongoing investigations to uncover the full scope of the trafficking operation.

The government also expressed appreciation to Ivorian authorities for their collaboration and intelligence-sharing, which played a key role in the success of the mission.

Authorities cautioned that human trafficking syndicates continue to lure unsuspecting victims—particularly young people—with deceptive job and travel offers. As a result, Ghanaians have been urged to remain vigilant and exercise caution when presented with such opportunities.

The Ministry further advised the public to verify all recruitment and travel offers through official institutions, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment Relations, and Ghana’s diplomatic missions abroad, to avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes.

The government, under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama, reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling human trafficking networks and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice, stressing that the safety and welfare of Ghanaians remain a top priority.
