
The Ghana Police Service in the Upper East Region has retrieved a significant cache of ammunition from a mechanic workshop in Bolgatanga, raising concerns over the presence of illegal arms in the area.
According to an official report, the operation was triggered on May 9, 2026, after a local auto mechanic alerted authorities to suspicious items discovered by his apprentice while sweeping the workshop premises. The facility is located near the Assemblies of God Church in Bolgatanga.
Acting swiftly on the tip-off, a team of police officers proceeded to the scene, where they uncovered two sealed packets concealed in fertilizer sacks inside a hen coop. Upon inspection, the packets were found to contain a total of 1,400 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition, with each packet holding 700 rounds.

The retrieved ammunition has since been secured and is currently in police custody as evidence. Authorities have launched investigations to determine the origin of the ammunition and identify those responsible for its possession.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its commitment to maintaining safety and has urged citizens to report any suspicious activities to assist ongoing security efforts.
