H.E Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, The Vice President of Ghana has welcomed Kaja Kallas on her official visit to Ghana, describing the engagement as a significant milestone in strengthening the longstanding partnership between Ghana and the European Union.
The high-level visit culminated in the signing of the Ghana–European Union Security and Defence Partnership, making Ghana the first African country to enter into such a strategic arrangement. The move places Ghana among a select group of partners, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Norway.
In her remarks, the Vice President acknowledged the European Union’s sustained support through key initiatives such as the European Peace Facility and the EU Security and Defence Initiative, which have collectively funded over 30 projects in Ghana. These interventions span critical areas including conflict prevention, counterterrorism, border management, maritime security, and cybersecurity.
A major highlight of the visit was the handover of essential security equipment aimed at boosting the operational capacity of Ghana’s security services. The equipment included Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) vehicles, counter-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems, motorcycles, and drones.
Touching on regional security concerns, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang referenced recent developments in the sub-region, including the tragic killing of Ghanaian traders in Burkina Faso. She emphasised the urgent need for stronger strategic partnerships to address emerging threats and maintain stability.
She reiterated that peace remains the cornerstone of sustainable development and collective security, underscoring Ghana’s commitment to deepening cooperation with international partners to safeguard the region.
