President John Dramani Mahama has called for greater investment in skills development, discipline, and a 24-hour economy as part of efforts to drive Ghana’s growth and create opportunities for the youth.
Speaking at the Head of State Awards ceremony, Mr Mahama stressed that the development of young people must go beyond academic achievement to include leadership, service, and practical skills. He noted that the awards scheme plays an important role in shaping responsible and resilient young citizens.
He indicated that in today’s global economy, academic qualifications alone are not sufficient, highlighting the need for skills, innovation, and adaptability. He therefore encouraged increased focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), apprenticeship programmes, and digital skills development.
The President also emphasised discipline and integrity as essential values for national development, urging young people to take responsibility and contribute positively to society.
Mr Mahama further linked youth development to the implementation of a 24-hour economy, which he said could help expand productivity and create more employment opportunities across various sectors.
He urged beneficiaries of the awards and the youth in general to take advantage of available opportunities to build their capacities and support national development.
