Ghana to Declare First Marine Protected Area at Cape Three Points

Ghana will officially establish its first Marine Protected Area (MPA) at Cape Three Points on Tuesday, April 14.

The Vice President, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, is expected to lead the declaration as part of efforts to enhance marine conservation and promote sustainable fisheries.

Officials at the Vice Presidency say the initiative is intended to restore dwindling fish stocks, safeguard marine biodiversity, and strengthen the country’s blue economy.

The project is also expected to support coastal livelihoods by improving long-term fish availability and contributing to national food security.

The move follows Cabinet approval granted in October 2025, marking a significant step towards sustainable ocean governance.

The protected zone lies along the Western Region coastline between Ampatano and Domunli, covering about 700 square kilometres of important marine and coastal ecosystems.

It serves as a vital breeding and nursery habitat for key fish species, including sardinella, anchovies, and mackerel.

The area also functions as a migratory route for whales and dolphins, while providing nesting grounds for sea turtles.
