The Ministry of Health has announced the recruitment of 6,245 nurses and midwives under a nationwide exercise aimed at strengthening primary healthcare delivery across Ghana. The recruitment was carried out from a total of 6,500 available slots.
According to the Ministry, the exercise forms part of government efforts to improve healthcare access, especially in underserved communities. The recruitment also included 771 allied health professionals, 235 pharmacy professionals, and 300 physician assistants.
Speaking in Accra, officials disclosed that the Ministry had received financial clearance to recruit about 8,000 health professionals despite the backlog of over 105,000 unemployed qualified health workers nationwide.
The Director of Human Resources at the Ministry of Health, Frederick Mensah-Acheampong, said some nursing vacancies in northern districts remain unfilled, adding that a mop-up exercise would soon be conducted to absorb eligible applicants who could not complete the process.
